Sylvy is a mathematician working at the University of Central Lancashire, based in the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute for Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy.

Her research interests lie in model theory, a part of mathematical logic, including its connections to algebra and number theory.

Sylvy is passionate about spreading her love of mathematics to a wider audience. She also enjoys mathematical puzzles, and a variety can be found on her website and on her blog — Sylvy’s Mathsy Blog.

In Sylvy’s chapter we get the chance to explore an exciting range of mathematics through our beloved superheros. Some of it is straightforward, and some of it is challenging. Whether you want to shrink to the size of an insect or grow to be a large as a house, let alone try to go back and change the past, some straightforward calculations, equations and thought experiments reveal to us why these superhero antics are not happening all around us all the time!
